May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month, and it’s an important time to recognize how our physical health—especially our digestive health—can have a significant impact on our mental well-being.
More than 3 million Americans live with Celiac Disease, an autoimmune condition where consuming gluten triggers an immune response that damages the small intestine. This reaction affects the villi—tiny structures that help absorb nutrients—leading to symptoms like nausea, rashes, fatigue, joint pain, and more.
But beyond the physical symptoms, untreated Celiac Disease can also impact mental health—causing brain fog, irritability, and even contributing to anxiety and depression.
Gut Health and Mental Health: The Connection Is Real
Celiac Disease is just one of many conditions that demonstrate the close relationship between the gut and the brain. Recent studies show that:
Mental health challenges can worsen digestive symptoms
Poor gut health may trigger or intensify emotional distress
A healthy gut microbiome can improve mood regulation and reduce inflammation
In short: your gut and your mind are in constant conversation.
Tips to Support Your Gut and Mental Health
Supporting your digestive system doesn't just help your body—it benefits your emotional well-being too. Here are a few evidence-based tips to improve both:
🍽 Eat regularly to stabilize blood sugar and reduce irritability and fatigue
💧 Stay hydrated to support concentration and overall energy
🥑 Include healthy fats (like those from plants and fish) to nourish your brain
🥦 Add whole grains, fruits, and vegetables for essential vitamins and minerals
🍳 Include protein in each meal—amino acids help regulate mood
🥣 Support gut health with fiber-rich foods, beans, and probiotics
☕ Be mindful of caffeine, especially if it affects your sleep or increases anxiety
