This October, we’re focusing on medication awareness—an important part of mental and physical wellness that often gets overlooked. Whether taken daily, occasionally, or only as needed, medications play a powerful role in managing everything from infections to chronic pain and mental health symptoms.
But with that power comes responsibility and risk.
While medications can be incredibly beneficial when used correctly, they also carry the potential for harm—especially when misused, misunderstood, or combined with other substances. That’s why October is a key time for therapists and healthcare professionals to educate individuals on medication safety and informed usage.
Here are a few essential tips to help you or a loved one understand and manage medications wisely:
💊 Ask questions. Talk to your doctor about why you’ve been prescribed a medication and how it works.
📖 Read the instructions. Understand how and when to take the medication, and whether it needs to be taken with food, at a certain time of day, etc.
⚠️ Know the side effects. Be aware of how the medication may affect your body and mood—and monitor your response closely.
🔄 Discuss other medications. Always share what you’re already taking to avoid dangerous interactions.
🧠 Consider your history. If you or a family member has a history of substance use or addiction, talk with your provider about safer alternatives and the risk of dependency.
Being proactive with your medications—whether they’re for mental health, physical health, or both—can protect your well-being and empower you to make better health decisions.
Let’s continue the conversation about medication safety, and make informed choices together.
